And while his tone was a tease, a humour sweet and true, there was something in his eyes that flickered like embers. Something that warned for her to be pushed away. Some sort of self-preservation.
But he ignored it. Pushed it down with a swallow of the growing lump in his throat. Looked back towards the lake. Looks like we're gettin' closer, he mused, gesturing his nose forwards, where the dawning sky twinkled within the water. You fancy a swim, lil' thing? This time, more genuine.
