Outlaw glanced up from his sniffing, which was not helping much. At the Lab it was simple- strange fluids, dogs, humans, lab tile, lab wall, needle, metal. A few other scents, but that was pretty much it. But here in the wild the ground was crowded with too many scents- so many things, it was too confusing. And so much noise. Cicadas, screaming, sobbing, buzzing, an owl, a bat screech, rustling in the trees and bushes, and so many strange animal sounds far off that he couldn't identify. There were so many scents to name. So instead of continuing the useless task, his haunted brown eyes flitted to the open van doors. A few more live dogs had emerged from the wreckage, recognized by face, but still unknown to him. The two he had seen before still seemed to be looking for life. A big dog with a strange scar across his face said something as he pushed open a cage door. Something was inside, but from here, he couldn't see what. Or who. He walked towards the big dog, about to ask what to do now. He seemed old and brave to Outlaw so far. So he's probably wise and old enough and stuff to know what to do now, right? Outlaw thought. But he hesitated nervously, staying a few yards behind Dogmeat.
