All Welcome
She moved on from the valley, it was full of sweet grass sure but there was predators around that could harm her. Given that predators were everywhere and that’s why she had decided to move. The burly female was on her way to the mountains hopefully to get a better look at where she had wondered to.

It was a while before she had wondered out of the forest and beside a lake. It was full of water that looked pretty thirst quenching. Before continuing on to drink she took a look left and then right, looking for anyone around. Once the coast was clear she took a few steps toward the lake and then looked around again. The male from her past still very much haunts her.

Scars from her beatings still stood out from her coat. The hair loss was prominent in some place where bad things had happened to her. A snort and a stomp were all she gave before going to the shore of the lake and dipping her head down. As she was drinking up the water her eyes wandered to the other side of the lake looking into the shadows of the woods.

genghis could now, with great confidence, say he understood why he tended to let the forests belong to the wolves.

besides the lack of grass, it was impossible to get anywhere. it was not made for him, that much was immediately clear; branches tangled and snapped against his sides, snagged in his mane, and all the fallen trees and errant rocks proved far too much of a hazard for him to safely take anything more than a very slow trot. if there was a place he felt safe to settle, it was not this one, and when the trees finally broke to a lake surrounded by a tangled overgrowth of grass the mild irritation that had worked its way up through his trek resolved itself in a deep sigh.

better. he looked up, nostrils flaring, head moving slowly from side to side as he took in the situation and ticked off the usual boxes. there was no scent of predators, nothing out of the ordinary; the grass was not that long that it would conceal anything capable of doing him harm, and there were no overhanging cliffs or crags for something like a lion to hide. what there was -- across the water -- was a caribou. one brown eye rolled to fix briefly on it. not a particularly common sight, nor completely alien.

one which meant it was more than likely safe for now, if neither had noticed any potential threat.

he shook his mane out and took the couple steps remaining to the edge of the lake. the water gleamed clear as crystal in the sunlight, baring the silvery gleam of fish underneath, and mirroring the caribou's pose he lowered his head to drink.

As she was taking her last few gulps and swallowing them down her ears flicked hearing branches break and something thudding on the ground. It had her scared at first, flashbacks came of the male that wanted to see her dead. In her mind they weren’t just noises they were fight or flight warnings. Adrenaline kicked in coursing through her blood making her heart beat faster and sweat soak her pelt. Minutes felt like hours as she took a few steps back almost stumbling over her back leg and eyes still locked on the echoing sound.

Next, she seen it... it wasn’t the ghost who haunted her past who she thought is around the corner every time she walks. In fact it was a horse of some sort and he was bending down to get a drink the same as she was just doing. The adrenaline came crashing down and she breathed heavily and then studied him for a minute. It made her angry that she was so susceptible to be fearful since what happened.

The chocolate female let out a small mew hoping to get his attention. Maybe he could point her in a direction of good food or warm her of predators nearby. The interaction had no downfall to it so she at least tried it.

genghis was not exactly driven to seek out social interaction. other than his brief acknowledgement of her presence -- meeting eyes was enough in his estimation -- he simply busied himself with the water. one ear flicked out to register the caribou's heavy breaths as he did so, but that was more self-preservation than interest; if it ran, he might well consider doing the same thing. the woods were not a good place to get into an extended conflict when one only had hooves, and when it came to wolves that was rather like trying to line up a hammer and nail with one's eyes closed at the best of times.

his tail swished softly behind him in what he knew was an ultimately fruitless attempt to discourage the insects that were truly the worst part of summer. it was only when the caribou made a soft noise -- not a word, yet clearly directed at him -- that he decided to react.

he took a last gulp of water -- it was, after all, summer, and despite the day under the shade of the trees his short coat was already shiny with sweat -- before he lifted his head, angled to the side so he could regard her with faint, thoughtful interest. this was no predator, after all, so there was no need for the aggression he would have otherwise gone with.

"you need something?"

The horse seemed to be contemplating talking to her and her ears slowly fell back to her skull. She shook her head as the irritating insects buzzed around. The heaviness of her horns able to keep them away for a mere second before they were right back at it again. It had been a few minutes before he responded to her mew and she was a bit irritated.

’you need something?’

She let out a small snort to herself, it seemed as if every male had been the same. Species didn’t matter because males were all the same, savage. Since she had taken a few steps back from the shore of the lake she decided to get a bit closer now. He could hear her better and she could see him better this way.

I was just wondering your name, or if you’d even like to have a conversation?” She said with a hollowed voice. Her confidence was a bit down since her scare earlier and how uninterested he seemed in her presence. “My name is Bells if you care to know. “ this sentence came with some attitude. Of course she wasn’t trying to be that woman but it was polite to notice other people and at least say one word to them.

as far as genghis was concerned, he had been perfectly polite, and thus was not quite sure what to make of the snort he recieved in reply. the eye trained on the caribou blinked, once, with pointed slowness; he took a step back from the water, hooves tapping sharp beats on the sandy lakeside, and watched as it began to walk towards him, around the lake's edge. it did not come particularly close; genghis did not move away.

it was not that he was passive, as far as beasts went; he simply preferred to spend his energy where it was necessary, and this had every possibility of becoming a perfectly pleasant conversation. while he was not one for small-talk either, it was not that he was incapable of being...maybe not friendly. but amiable enough, when it came to those who were not out to eat him.

"don't mind, if that's what you'd like," he offered in reply, despite the audible attitude in her words. he did not quite understand why, but he didn't think it was worth getting into. "though. not sure what information i have to offer. haven't been here long."

he rolled his shoulders in something akin to a shrug, and offered a quick dip of his head. "name's genghis."

The male seemed to be okay with a conversation, she let her ears relax and they brushed her horns. The chocolate female looked around in front of her then over her shoulder behind her, making sure that there was no danger especially the ghost that haunted her past. With the coast clear she could respond to the horse knowing that for that moment she was safe.

Hello Genghis. How long have you been here? I’ve been here a few days. I don’t really know my way around. I was looking to see if you had any pointers about where I could go?” She said softly. It took everything in her not to look around again to see if she was in any danger. It became a habit of sorts that she had to see that she was safe every second of every day. One day it might save her life.

genghis watched silently as she seemed to relax, her ears drooping a bit from where they were angled sharply by her horns, and then turned to glance over her shoulder. that made him stiffen a bit, his gaze following her own, wondering if she'd heard something, but a quick survey and sniff of the air revealed nothing but trees and grass. just a check, then. fair enough. one could never be too careful, if they valued keeping themselves intact.

he did let out a faint huff at her words. he thought he'd already answered that for her, but apparently not. "not long," he repeated, offering the equivalent of a lifted eyebrow instead. "came in from the north. there's a valley up there, not many predators i saw. not one for trees, though." he snorted, shifting a hoof across the dirt. at this point he'd give a lot for a nice open field; something where he could look out and see in all directions and not have the constant feeling something was trying to creep up on him. "headed down south, now. hoping to find some plains."

he had no doubt he'd run into something eventually; the question was whether or not it would be crawling with things that wanted to eat him. he hadn't often seen wolves or bears take down his kind, but there was no doubt it had happened before, and he'd not lived this long by being reckless.

Bells nodded at his answer, not long wasn’t really an answer but how was one supposed to keep track anyway. She still felt the need to be wary as she had always been that way. Her ears twitched as he was talking and her eyes were shooting around everywhere. As he finished she was pleased with his answers and intended to give her own two sense.

trees also don’t go well with horns if you couldn’t tell already that they would be a burden.” She chuckled a bit, her horns did keep her on her feet given they got stuck in everything that they touched somehow. “A valley sounds nice though, but if there are many trees that may not be for me. I haven’t saw plains yet, just a small field I grazed in before coming here. “ she said given that he would trek that way maybe he would find the field. Bells turned and looked behind her again before waiting on his response. He seemed to be a man of short words, which could be helpful out here knowing that there are things that can eat you.
