her screams echoed through the nightmare he had each and every night, since he had lost her.

they had ripped her from his grasp, the thugs, pushing her back, back, until he no longer had her in sight. the sound of her voice--crying his name--faded, until it was no more, only the whisper of the late summer air to keep him company.

and then the screams had began again. bloodcurdling shrieks. he had struggled, struggled, but they had held him to the ground and pressed so hard against his windpipe that he lost himself to darkness. when he roused, there was something in front of him. the sharp smell of blood and fear hung in the air. he blinked, rapidly, and rose to his feet, vomiting bile until his stomach ached and his throat caught fire.

they had placed her eyeball, plucked cleanly from its socket, beside his muzzle as he slept, the green iris wide with silent shock.

the nightmares had followed him here, and each night, he woke with a start, shaking and panting, drool trailing from the corners of his lips. scrabbling at the ground, attempting desperately to cling to reality, beside the crystalline pool he liked to slumber by. living without her was a hell on earth, but nothing was worse than reliving that day, every night. over and over again.

it was a fate worse than hell. he had never thought such a thing was possible, before.
