the lake had become quiet.

the man, moss, lingered and zharille did not care; he was here for the child nutu, who themselves slept and grew, and it would be good to have more eyes and teeth at the ready.

soon her own blood would be born to this land, again. zharille could feel them inside; she had experienced the swelling of her belly, the fickle appetite, the sparks of maternal longing and powerful ogre rage.

the woman did not patrol her land as thoroughly now. she sought the den where her first children had come to exist, and spent some time excavating it to her liking. from then on, she became earthbound. only mesen-ka was welcome close.

he would bring food, or news. or sometimes whisk the child nutu to safety when zharille's anger flared. the maternal desire to keep this found baby close was there, yes, but so too was the knowledge that her blood would soon be stolen away.

and so she became this hungry, feeding thing living in the dirt.
