her season still had not come.
to say she was worried, now, would have been an understatement. coraline thought she was doing everything right. she had routine; she ate the right amount of protein, she went for ice plunges just before the dusk, she groomed herself diligently and spoke to the stars as if they were her mothers.
and yet she still felt — defective. as if there was something inside of her, a poison or perhaps a parasite, that kept everything she wanted just out of her reach.
perhaps she should seek a midwife. perhaps she was not wishing hard enough. perhaps — she didn't know.
tonight, she sat upon the stretch of the lagoon and stared down into the reflection she was starting to hate.
