bawg.chireille announced to no one in particular, somberly holding her paw aloft.
raising its antennas as it was thrust skyward, the bug on chireille’s arm stared back. chireille was mesmerized by the thousand glinting angles of its eyes — or what approximated as its eyes. she really didn’t know.
sinking delicately to her haunches, chireille slowly lifted her other forelimb. she held the bug’s unblinking stare intently, captivated by the glittering reflections housed hundred-fold in each compound eye. the bug must have sensed the would-be-murderer’s intentions, for as soon as the shadow of her raised limb crossed over its body, it sprung into the air.
a mournful pout darkened chireille’s features as the bug flew away, dangling limbs and long wings carrying it up into the summer sky and well out of any ambitious child’s reach.
A chitter rose over the crash of sea foam, and the little boy paused in his trek to squint skyward. Sure as the sun rose in the west, he spotted a large insect lazing across the endless blue, as reaching as the ocean.
If he had wings, that could have been him up there - long and thin and chattering. A strange little thing, who wore his bones like armour and his voice like a relentless song.
Hello up there!he shouted at the bug. Riptyde skipped forward, his gangly legs kicking up the sand.

Do you see anything to eat?he called up again. The bug drifted in no urgent direction. Riptyde crested a small hill with a sigh, and his glittering eyes still fixed on the sky.
If only you could talk wolf as good as you talk bug!

onwards the beetle flew, joining the endless blue echelon reserved for but the aerial few.
chireille’s gaze snapped back to earth: a joyful voice seizing her attention. fumbling onto four unsteady limbs, chireille marched right to the source — oblivious to the danger this could put her in.
the curiosity in her expression transformed to delight as she saw a silvery figure skipping in the sand. too big to be a brother, but too small to be another adult, chireille immediately identified him as friend. clambering through the sand after him, the small pup’s tail beat in frenzy.

She was driftwood and sandstone, the rusted run of iron on bluffs, and she raced towards him. Riptyde lost the beetle somewhere in the bright beyond. The buzz became one with the rolling waves, and she was more interesting, anyways.
She had friend in her eyes, and how long since he'd had a friend! The crabs and fish didn't count. The gulls almost did. But how long, since he'd had someone like him?
Hi hi, I'm Riptyde!and he slapped his paws on the wet ground quick enough that the mucky sand didn't even have time to suck on his toes. He sprung up, bounced from side to side, and slapped the sand again, a clear invitation.

when the much larger pup spoke, chireille froze. the voice, the noise, the loudness of it all was new to her. what solemnity she mustered disappeared the moment he playbowed, then playbowed again.
FRIEND!
chireille needed no second introduction. too young to say her name (or even know it), she simply lunged oafishly after her new friend, seemingly with zero coordination mustered.
