He had been productive this morning, allowing himself to chill out a little and leave the den just long enough to find something to eat. He had made his way towards the creek, but his path was altered once he picked up the fresh scent of the deer herd he had been keeping tabs on. He tracked the creatures along the borders until his keen gaze found them grazing in the open field on the opposite side of the water from him. As usual, he had watched them for a while, trying to find some area of weakness and mostly expecting to find nothing promising for a single wolf like he did all the other times he was in this position. The herd moved slowly until it was hugging the edge of the fast-moving water, and Kavik had shifted his position as needed to ensure he wasn't noticed. He watched a young doe, emerald gaze taking in her every move and calculating whether or not she would be worth the energy he would need to expend to take her down. But, he didn't need to think too long about his decision because the deer accidentally moved too close to the water and soon found herself sliding down the slick bank and into the icy liquid. Her splashing and flailing startled the rest of the herd, causing it to flee in the opposite direction and leaving his target alone and struggling to fight against the current and get back to the land. In all of her thrashing and panic, the doe didn't realize she was coming close to his side of the creek where he had been hiding. The alpha saw the situation for the opportunity that it was, and when she managed to get her front half up on the bank, he jumped on her, taking her by surprise and sinking his teeth into her neck before she even realized what happened. After a few more seconds of struggling that felt considerably longer to the hunter, the deer went limp against him. Kavik angled his legs on the bank and began pulling back, the muscles in his legs tightening as he pulled himself and the added weight of the deer to a more secure place farther from the water. He dropped the carcass once he felt it was safe, panting heavily for a few more minutes and steeling himself to drag the meal back to the den.
He entered through the cave opening hind-end first and stopped once he had pulled the doe all the way inside. Not only was it plenty for the three of them to eat their fill and then some, he also thought it was a good way to approach the subject of asking Alessia to lead the creek wolves at his side. He knew the pregnancy and birth had been hard for her, and she hadn't been doing much better since the children had been born, especially with them all being so sickly, but he hoped she would be open to the possibility of helping him lead once she felt able. Since Constantine's stepping down and Soltero's injury, Kavik was left as the creek's sole leader, shouldering the weight of an alpha's responsibility alone, and he could really use the help of someone that he trusted.
