Alone, he worked to improve himself, stayed up late into the night, went to where he could not be watched, and put to use this lame, cursed limb.
It hurt. Still, it hurt. There was no sting, not like the cuts that had once adorned it, and there was less of an idle, thrumming ache.
Instead he felt this searing sort of burn, a strain each time he put his weight onto it, like it might burst if he went through with it. How could he become any sort of warrior in this shape? He kicked at the sand with a forepaw and let out a angered grunt.
He was remiss to be mocked or laughed at. That was why he chose these far corners.
Memories plagued him as he met with failure in his attempts, frustration overwhelmed him, he tried to run, and plunged forwards into the sand, denied again his freedom. His gaze burned with an intensity that threatened to swallow him.

tamasi had meant it when she told nokht she would help him. so when she had noticed him, today, slip away as what he thought was unseen, she had followed. specter against the oasis backdrop, blazing eyes watching with a cautious curiosity.
she had watched up until he kicked the sand, and then tamasi moved forward through the fronds of jungle foliage, her lips pulling tight.
she didn’t pity him. she didn't want to tell him he was trying his best, either. neither of these things were what the kid wanted to hear and she knew this. so instead of coddling, tamasi cleared her throat.
her amber eyes flicked down to his leg, then back to his face.

His head would whip around to see who had just watched him catch a face-full of sand, embarrassment prickling the hairs on the back of his neck; quickly fading as he realized it was only Tamasi come to witness it.
He looked back to the sand and took a breath, like cool water washing over his mind, he would shake away his ghosts. He met her gaze through the slight sidelong tilt of his head, his voice a low mutter but not without a touch of humour to it, just her presence made even this feel... lighter.
Nokht stood again, slower, this time, and turned to face her.

...Yes.
Nokht stood again, slower, this time, and turned to face her.
It's just...How am I meant to fight when I can't even run?
