Osprey seemed to be in good spirits, which surprised him a little, especially when she delivered the news about her litter's fate. Peregrine's heart seized for a moment. He wasn't sure what he'd hoped would happen with his sister's pups. He supposed this was the best possible outcome, in a way, a sort of mercy. Yet it was still an enormous tragedy. For a few moments, he couldn't speak, simply letting the gravity of the situation wash over him. He felt particularly breathless over the fact that two of them had resembled Osprey and himself.

Rather than offer words of condolence, Peregrine eventually unfroze his limbs and gently swept his sister into a wolfish hug. He held onto her for a moment, pressing his nose against her temple and breathing quietly into her ear. He then released her and drew back. He wanted to say something. He wasn't sure what, until the simple words, "I'm here for you, Oss," tumbled from his black lips.
