Whilst the wolves hid away from the storm, other creatures saw an opportunity.
The creature descended the mountain on nimble paws. She had set up camp at the rear of Nova Peak, hunting in the plains to the north and avoiding any wolves that scaled the peak. But the scent of pups had piqued her interest. It was subtle, brought to her heights by visiting members of the pack. She sensed their presence in their footprints - on scraps of fur seized by bramble. Tesla liked pups. Loved pups.
The young mountain lion's forepaws hit the forest floor without a sound. She was in the heart of claimed territory now - her first time on this side of the mountain since the pack had caught her attention. The storm reached down from above, disturbing the needles and leading the branches in a violent, angry dance above her head. The predator crept forward, staring eyes looking between the trees for any sign of wolf.
Not that far away, Bazi stepped out of the den to check for any sign of her pack-mates.
