Even though he had been in an emotional pit of despair lately, Peregrine wasn't the best at noticing the same in others. When Pan smiled, he didn't recognize it as forced or pained. He did notice that Pan wasn't eating, though he chalked that up to the fact that he'd said he wasn't that hungry in the first place. He'd mentioned that the rabbit was destined for the stockpiles, not his stomach.

"Well, would you like to join me on a patrol? That's what I was doing before you rammed my ass," Peregrine joked dryly. He paused, teeth clenching for a moment as he realized the double entendre that had slipped out of his mouth. For whatever reason—perhaps because Pan was just different, special like he'd said—he didn't drop his usual crass remarks and risque jokes around the male, so it felt out of place.

Moving past that, he added, "It'll give us time to catch up and get to know one another," in a hopefully encouraging tone, the wolfish equivalent of holding out his hand.
