An intense flash of lightning blinded her. Bazi turned her head over her shoulder, squinting to regain her sight. When she turned back, a friendly face was grinning at her.

"Hey, handsome," she called to him, forced to raise her voice to be heard over the storm. It was making short work of her coat, beading the guard hairs until they sagged under the excess weight. Soon, they would both look like drowned cats. The wind tugged at her, and Bazi's broadened her stance in protest. "Where is everyone else? Are they safe?"

A mere hundred meters away, an unwelcome visitor seized upon the scent of very small wolves.
