Darsal wasn't trying to go up the face of the cliff xD She was circling around to where she could climb onto it. I'm going to write anyway, but you can choose to edit your post if you want to ^^
Darsal made it atop the Plateau without toil. At this point, she crept along, avoiding the open stretches between the grasses in which she hid herself. Her muted pelt of gray and black did well to deflect attention, unlike a brighter color would have.
She knew of a herd of elk here, in the confined safety of the Plateau's elevation. Long ago, when she'd spotted this area from an aerial view, she'd been awestricken by the ingenuity of these elk. With only one side from which a predator could approach, the animals never had to be uncertain of where an attack would be coming from. There was only one way onto the flattened land, and one way off of it... but that could work both ways.
Ascertaining that she was downwind of the elk, she took refuge in a patch of grasses and studied a harem from afar. The massive animals were strong, minimally affected by the famine because of their herbivorous diet. However, their young from last spring was not yet fully grown, and could be split from the pack, with the help of another wolf.
With that, a bark sounded from the direction of the Cliffs.
