No longer were either of them children, no longer could they be held back. He would show to her the entire world, and then, at night, it would be beside her that he'd rest. The girl would be his purpose, his treasure to guard, and in return for it all he'd receive her affections; it was the manner in which his delusion operated, but never had his thoughts been voiced aloud, and so yet had he been to undergo a reality check.

Xan had trekked through the land, stopping when necessary so that he could rest, but rare had it been for his pauses to last any longer than an hour.
