vuk jerked to a halt when seff tripped, whirling to move toward him with worried alacrity. however, there seemed nothing amiss with the child; she nosed over his body thoroughly before nudging him playfully and setting off at a slower pace. their running had increased her thirst; she walked alongside seff, guiding him toward the stream. 

when it had come into view, the pale girl chuffed gently at her little son and waded into the shallows, drinking deeply before lifting her head, water droplets falling from her chin, to watch for danger or for visitors.
