But Jhala never left. Very rarely did the Vicar leave the den for anything, and if she did she left Reek inside to guard the children. Astik and Tapat meant a lot to her, despite their unwelcomed arrival in the first place. She didn't want to leave them by themselves, and most certainly didn't want to let others near them while she was away.

She was exhausted though, so when Laurel poked her bitchy little head through the door Jhala gave nothing but a light growl. It didn't send her away, it was just a warning: don't do anything stupid. She then rested her head on her paws, her ears perked but her eyes closed, too tired to pay much more attention. She could hear if something was wrong. The pups were just by her stomach, not eating but not sleeping.
