the place of the glowing altar was where relmyna now spent her time, if she was not with cicero. in the months to come, she supposed she would involve herselves with the wolves of blackfeather. whispers of war had not escaped her, nor the general feeling of tension in their dark encampment. she had come by a new rank, no doubt through her subservience to vaati and the others above her — relmyna allowed herself only a small fluttering of pride before she concentrated on what it was she intended to do.
the creek alongside which she had fainted had been revisited, and what the evoker had thought was only a lump of ice turned out to be a small rock, the size of her pawpad, and transparent. she had tested it with her teeth, her breath, what little remained of her tongue, and had not found it wanting.
satisifed, intrigued, relmyna had returned now to the altar. gingerly the patchwork wolfess nosed the glassy stone onto its edge and sat in the snow before it. since she had awoken to herself, at least in some form, the woman had ignored the wisps of hidden words that sometimes flared through her consciousness, but now she let her mind's defenses fall and peered curiously at the rock she had found, strangely comforted by the icelike patterns within its clear shape.
in time, the evoker's breathing slowed; she did not stir as she stared unseeingly at what she had found and tentatively brought to the forefront of her awareness one name.
