Liffey watched her friend, silently. His suggestion was like a knife to her heart, for her thoughts ran along the same course as his. It was an awful thing to feel like she was being judged for caring for her childhood friend, and it killed her that Gannet clearly was aware of how their relationship was affecting her status in the pack. He clearly felt terrible. She felt terrible. She couldn't help but feel like this was no way to live.

Liffey nodded softly, making a rather pathetic attempt at a smile as she stepped forward to nudge his shoulder affectionately. She would go, but not because of what the pack would think of her for staying. Only because she didn't trust herself to speak just then, not when so much bitterness was so close to the surface. If she stayed, she knew that she wouldn't be able to hold it back anymore, and then where would they be? So she turned and departed without another word.
