April 16 — 18, 2018: Morningside
Knowing that her time with Catori was limited and that she had been away from her island for far too long, Coelacanth awoke with a certain restlessness. She was grateful for Grayday’s invitation to stay the night and longed to repay his kindness by stocking the caches, but at forty-five pounds soaking wet, she would be hard-pressed to take down anything of note. Ranging eastward from the territory, she managed to come across a young mountain goat to whom life had not been kind. A jagged gash down its left forelimb had started to blacken and dry into leathery, necrotic strips, and the remainder of the limb up to the axillary region was edematous, the skin a garish purplish-red.
Using a mixture of nipping at its heels and evading its half-hearted charges, Coelacanth herded the thing back to Morningside territory — but she could not call for help. She could only hope that one of Grayday’s wolves would come along and see what an opportunity was laid before them. In the interim, while she waited, she circled the goat relentlessly, working on keeping it nearby without driving it too far within the territory. Despite her affinity with the Morningsiders, she wasn’t certain of her welcome in terms of leaving the territory and waltzing right back in — and anyway, there were still many wolves here she didn’t know. Perhaps the goat knew it was doomed; though it still eyed her testily, it stood where she’d driven it and stopped trying to escape and return home.
