Poisoned and thrown to the sea, there was no real chance for survival. The grey-furred yearling had always been a fighter, a survivor, grasping on to the barest threads of hope and turning them into life— but there were no threads to grasp, here. Her lungs were filling quickly with water, waves battering the outside of her body even as another war waged within; she would die soon.
She was conscious, somehow. Barely, painfully, but aware. There were some thoughts; trivial things, distant and quickly passing. Her life had never been important enough to inspire dramatic flashbacks or an epiphany. There was no one to mourn her passing, no one for her to think maybe she'd miss when she was dead. Briefly she lamented the realization that she'd never be warm again— and then there was only cold, dull blue and the crushing sound of nothing.
