If the girl had known, she would have told her mother that she was beautiful. She would have whispered it to her every day that she was alive, just so that Laurel could know how much her daughter thought of her. As it was, Piper did knot know of the thoughts that plagued her single parent. She was wise enough to see the toll that Lucas' disappearance had caused, but not intuitive enough to gather the insecurities that were underneath. Perhaps, this was what was meant for the child; living blissfully unaware of the internal conflicts that waged war inside of her mother.

Red was the color, and Piper turned to Laurel with a smile that crinkled near her eyes. It made her feel special, but she wasn't sure why. With that task in mind, she turned her head back to the waters and wondered if she had ever happened upon a red stone when she had been hunting for shiny rocks for her brother. “I don't know if I've ever seen a red one in the water. You'd have the most special rock in the world if I could find one,” she mused out loud.
