it could have been a good thing. asmodeus had fallen for the way jorunn regarded him. the way her arms had encircled him. the way she spoke to him.

there was a sharp blossom of pain along his haunches. asmodeus whirled with a snarl more questioning than a threat. blood trickled from where jorunn had clipped his flesh.

for a moment he only stared at her, unsurprised and yet shocked. and then he turned, lunging along the sand in the opposite direction.

asmodeus would run until he no longer heard jorunn behind him.
