He was indeed awake.
Melaneus had heard his brother rouse, but had chosen to stay curled up and seemingly asleep, even when he had felt his brother linger at his side. Only when Lycabas had moved along and Melaneus could no longer feel his prescience did the shadowstalker unravel himself and crawl after his lighter kin.
He saw his brother through the fog-laden night. When they had first come to the Weald he had navigated the mist with great difficulty, but Melaneus had come to enjoy its shadows now.
The shadowstalker thought of practicing his stealth on Lycabas, but he already had success tonight when his brother had passed him up for being asleep. So Melaneus slunk alongside the other boy and eyed him with a quiet look,
Where are we going tonight?
