Tullik had been up the mountain when the first streaks crossed the sky.
She was frozen, watching them high up above, her mouth wide. They were certainly pretty, she considered. Then, Sialuk’s panic, rising high into the sky. Tullik’s heart began to hammer against her rib cage. That night of snowfall came to her again, watching the tan of her father vanish into the white. Her chest seized in her panic, and the girl turned, launching back down the mountain the way she had come.
Her legs carried her in blind fervor, drumming the rhythm of a bolting animal. She slipped through the tree line, gasping and burning like the stars high above. It would take her some time, running as she was, but she would eventually show up, sliding to a halt. The girl shook like a baby deer as she gasped for air, looking between those assembled.
She felt the sharp prick of tears at her eyes, and quickly looked away.
