He left the whispering woods at his heel.
The buzzing returned with a vengeance, hysterical beetles asking where he had been, why he denied them so long.
They fell silent. He reveled in the power. The woods gave him power in spades, and he gladly held it below his heel. With mother safe in the hold of mesa wolves, and no sign of his dread father, Pelagius swept from the flatlands at a gallop, a streak of ginger topped white. The world turned to scrubland, then dipped into a desert.
But he knew where to go.
He took a wide left turn, sending a spray of dirt and sand.
He was panting when they opened before him. The world, the eyes of the gods, here before him. Two great pools of water, here in the desert. He dipped into them, curving his body to the water.
He smiled at himself.
