<3<3 100% here to keep the drama going while she's still fresh!
The trip to the ocean loomed, and with something big like that on his schedule, naturally, he began to prepare himself in a disorganized way. What he should have done right off the bat was speak with his Mom, so that she knew where he was going, and how long he'd be away- but something so important seemed like something he should build up for. And so, he spent his time hunting small creatures, and caching them all in one neat area so that he might essentially use that as leverage.
I hunted all this, so you should be alright for a bit, He imagined himself showing the pock-marked earth to his mother, each cache-site marked with a stone. And Bronte. I've caught enough for both of you, see? It felt good to imagine himself being such a capable provider- and making sure that his mother and sister would not go hungry while he was gone.
He had just cached a spruce grouse when he heard Anathema's voice rise in a desperate plea. A shudder rippled under his skin and at first, he balked and cowered. If something was after her, what good could he do? He quailed, circling and panting, anxiety spiking. He wasn't built for this. But he would have to face whatever it was regardless, because soon enough he could hear her crashing through brush. He hesitantly picked up a lope so it might appear as though he'd been trying to find her too; he was out of breath, but more from worry than exercise.
"Wait, wh-" He asked, eyes growing wide. She dissolved into tears, and he felt fear kindling, threatening to become a wildfire. He trembled. "What happened?" He asked, and then he spotted it- blood, trickling from her skin. Blood on her fur- not hers, though, it was too far from her own wounds. "Ana!" He said, seizing her in his grasp, gazing over her shoulder as if he expected the striped beast to bear down upon them.
It was too late to run now, anyway; and he was frozen with fear.
