Water was no stranger to her. She had crossed countless rivers and lakes during her journeys with her original pack, though they were almost always frozen, locked in the unyielding grip of winter. This, this was something entirely different. She watched in awe as waves crashed relentlessly upon the shore, a symphony of motion and sound unlike anything she'd known. The sharp tang of salt hung in the air, unusual but welcome, stirring her senses as the vast sea stretched endlessly before her.

Tentatively, she placed a paw on the sand. It shifted beneath her weight, yielding in a way that startled and delighted her. The sensation was soft and fleeting, like time slipping through her paws with each heartbeat. Encouraged, she ventured further, cautious but curious.

When the water finally reached her, it came in cool, playful laps against her toes, a teasing bite that was more invigorating than painful. Unable to resist, she leaned down and tasted the water.

Her reaction was immediate. She jerked upright, snapping her head back with an exaggerated shake, tongue lolling out in protest. It was awful, salty and strange, a shock to her senses. For a brief moment, she stood frozen in indignant disbelief. Then, the absurdity of it all caught up to her, and she laughed, really laughed. The sound was light and full of warmth, breaking through the layers of weariness and sorrow she had carried these past months.

Still smiling faintly, she turned and began to walk along the shoreline. Her paws padded softly through the shallows, the water cool but not unwelcome as it swirled around her legs. The world around her was simple, yet vast and beautiful, its openness calling to something deep within her, much like the tundra she once called home.

As she moved, something in the sand caught her attention. Pawprints. Her steps slowed, and her body tensed as instinct took over. Lifting her nose to the air, she searched for a scent. It was faint and unfamiliar, carried away by the sea breeze, but it seemed isolated, no pack lingered nearby.

Her curiosity piqued, she followed the trail. It led her further down the shore, where she finally spotted the source. A wolf, sprawled out on its back as though without a care in the world.

She stopped, tilting her head, before calling out, Hello there!
Kindness is the beginning of cruelty.
