a king must have a queen, his elders had told him. he must have heirs. the man had laughed at them, but they had known by the darkness of his eyes that he would hear no more, just as they knew when later he came to them with proclamations and intentions for his absence. they would have their queen.

the man's youngest brother, clever boy that he was, had been placed at the helm. who but a boy blessed by the gods could have survived the purging of his bloodline without succumbing to exile? he would be a good man, one day. he would rule well.

yet it was not for him, nor for their kingdom that kairos had come here.
