twitch stiffened at the question, though it wasn’t from offense—more like bracing against the weight of something half-buried. she was quiet for a moment, avoided ameline's eyes while she considered how much she wanted to say. 

her parents hadn’t been cruel—well, her mother wasn't—, and patience came in short supply. her father tried—tried to beat some kind of skill into her, figured if he kicked her down enough she'd learn to stand on her own—but that wasn't how twitch worked, and he only got frustrated. eventually, the lessons stopped. 

"sort of," she admitted at last, voice a few notches higher, lighter, like she didn't want to say it. "didn’t stick, though. my dad—" she hesitated, trying to word it as gently and vaguely as possible, "—well, he tried. gave up pretty quick."

it wasn’t bitter, just matter-of-fact. the past was the past. she didn’t blame him for it. it wasn’t like she’d ever given him much reason to think she had potential. 

she fell quiet again as ameline spoke, mulling over her words. "i get it." just in case. she’d never thought much about it before. avoiding trouble had always been enough. but she had a point—sometimes, you didn’t get a choice. "i'll ask tvar," she added, mostly in efforts to move one from the topic. maybe she would, if she got over herself for once.
