he mewled from where he lay, legs a tangled mess of wet knees and quivering ankles. the earth clung to his coat—slick and fresh and steaming where his mother’s warmth hadn’t yet faded. ears flicked once, twice, one still bent from the crush of birth.
he felt her before he saw her—mother, scent of milk and safety, gentle nudge against his flank.
his head lolled, nose twitching, mouth opening in soft, aimless licks. a whimper hummed in his throat, not quite a whinny, not quite a breath. just sound.
a name hung above him like a crown not yet earned.
pippin.
he sneezed. flopped a leg in protest. tried again, this time shifting forward, stilt-legged and unsteady, driven by the pull of her voice and the press of her nose.
another nudge.
a breath caught in his chest as he finally lunged upward, hind legs kicking once, awkward and brave. his front legs skidded, found mud, slipped again.
ears flicked forward. tail gave a tiny shake.
pippin mewled once more, softer now.
