Things were quiet after her return. The storm had passed; the shadows that were really people, gradually, became more like people, and in the days that followed Ghenaya's return to her family she saw this, as she saw many things.
The den was warm, the scents inviting for their familiarity. However Ghenaya, who until the storm had been a quiet and easy child, had become far more hostile in response to all the chaos she had endured. She no longer puddled herself among her siblings with great abandon—screeching and crying with any attention from anyone, between her brothers, sisters, and mother.
Her bruises would fade over time. The lasting discomfort of being handled, would not.
Even the attention of Morwenna, who had held her close and tried to soothe her in those first hours after returning, garnered abuse from the daughter: kicking feet, flailing limbs, shouting and babble, flavored with tears until Ghenaya was ultimately left to be swathed in furs, but alone.
