Well, guano. What was a boy supposed to make of a reaction like that? The stranger seemed positively unfazed, which would have made him a pretender if he hadn't asked him about his mom.

Pretenders smooth talked and coddled. Some of them attacked with teeth. This man did neither. He was stiff as the rock Riptyde crouched behind, and about as smooth as it, too.

And if a wolf wasn't a pretender, well, that meant they were almost a friend.
