Katmai smiled to himself.

"So do I," he replied, his heart warm as he thought of the older girl. Her desire to become a mother had made her into something of a symbol in his mind. Aside from being someone he hoped to become good friends with, his desire to see children running through the village was currently riding on her shoulders.

He settled in to wait, cleaning his paws while he attended Haedwig's meal. She asked him a question, then, and he supposed she did not want him simply waiting around for her to be done. He took his time with a rambling answer.

"There are nine of us, or so," he began, counting them off in his head. "Treepie was already here, with her sister Tikaani and their Alaric. He was a medicine man here when this village was still called Moonspear. You came with Kindle and Cosmo, of course. And I brought Kinusi — though she lived in the village of Moonspear when she was a girl, too. Other than that, it's just a girl named Kira who has come to us from afar."

He looked back up at her.

"For most of us, this is only our second season of leaffall," he said, contemplating the heavy skew toward youth in the pack. "Only you and Alaric have seen many years."

He did not realize that Cosmo was older than he appeared.
