And sure enough, Mordecai knew that if he gave it a few minutes someone would come calling after him. Only the fellow that did come calling after him did so with an edge to his voice. Letting his steps come to a resolute halt, Mordecai had turned an ear back to listen to the other long before he brought his gaze around. There was much to ascertain from the dutiful walk he found and the boldness implied that there was youth there. For a moment as the yearling approached him, Mordecai studied him unabashed as there was hardly anything wrong with sizing one another up. But soon thereafter, he deferred out of respect, as he wanted no trouble.
"Being curious," he said. "I used to live here." He kept it short and to the point, void of any number of smart-mouth answers that sprang to mind. Some other time, perhaps.
