It was mid afternoon as Rannoch pulled himself from the family den for the first time that day. Sunshine pleasantly draped over his plushy coat as he bowed before the den entrance and yawned. It was unusual for him to lounge around but he had felt that he needed it. But now that he was fully rested he needed to get out and do something.
Cypress was napping in the den with Eshe and he didn’t wish to disturb either of them. So, instead, he opted to call out to his father. He padded a few paces away from the den before he sat himself down and tipped his muzzle to the sky, beckoning raggedly for Scimitar to come to him.

Scimitar, while tracing the borders and marking them every few days, managed to never be too far from the den it seemed – and it amazed him even now as he heard the tiny voice of Rannoch – who was now eight weeks in age. The boys were explorers – but they were well-mannered ones that usually requested their parents’ permission before trailing too far, and so the large wolf was quick to return a short, clipped howl, promising his boy he would be there momentarily.
Good on his word, only moments would pass before the Frostfur emerged from the evergreen foliage, his eyes sharp upon silver youth. “Rannoch,” he murmured quietly, his tail sweeping through the air with a content wag. He did not speak further, instead, his muzzle tipped slightly, awaiting the boy to tell him what was on his mind.

He waited eagerly as his choppy called rolled towards the nearby evergreens and beyond. With time it faded, but a new call soon filled the void. He perked noticeably at the noise and a smile crawled onto his lips as he received his father’s message. He would be here soon. Knowing that his father was a man of his word, the silver prince sat and waited for his father’s arrival onto the scene.
When his father did come onto the scene, the child stood again and watched as the leader approached. Driving himself towards his father, the child approached with a wagging tail, a dipped head, and a wagging tail. Once Rannoch stood before his father he reached up and placed a kiss upon the older wolf’s chin.
“Dadee,” he murmured as he pulled back from his affections, his eyes reaching up to meet with his father’s turquoise eyes. “I wanna help wiff bad woofs!” The declaration with accompanied with a puff of his cramy’s chest. “I wanna keep pack happy.” Safe, sound, temperate-- all words he could have used-- were not in his vocabulary just yet.

The boys were getting older now, but despite this, they were no less enthusiastic to express their fondness for their family. Rannoch greeted him with a waving tail and a sloppy kiss, both of which Scimitar returned in kind.
He canted his muzzle lightly to the side as the boy spoke, bemusement flickering in his eyes. It did not surprise him, the initiative in which his son sought now, for the boys had both proven to be boisterous and thus far polite and honorable in their actions. “You will,” he murmured, his own form swinging to settle upon cinnamon haunches on the forest ground. “You want to be a mercenary apprentice?”

His feeling of pride only continued at his father’s next remarks. Grinning from ear to ear and wagging his tail, Rannoch listened on to his father’s next words. Excitement overcame him and he nodded promptly to Scimitar’s words. “Yes!” He quickly replied. He already knew quite a bit about the trade, from lessons from Eshe, and he knew it was what he wanted to do.
Perking himself up, a sense of seriousness overcame him as he asked his follow-up question. “How do I become tha appentice?”

His son was eager, and he withheld a small smile as he studied the youthful boy -- who was quickly growing. It wouldn't have surprised him if Rannoch obtained his own height and size, but time would tell. Even so, in mind and body, Rannoch seemed eager for the task.
"You practice," he offered, dipping his muzzle down to nudge the boy upon the cheek. "Mark the borders -- but do not talk to strangers alone. Practice your fighting -- spar, but do not aim to injure your opponent. As you grow, you will have more chances to prove yourself, no matter which apprenticeship you want to earn."

Rannoch would take his father's words and keep them close to his heart. With the advice given, the father and son went on to do just what Scimitar had suggested in his advice.
