for @Jhala

vuk had spent long nights of sleeplessnes thinking upon what she must now do. though the path was muddled, she had gained clarity in her hours of contemplation, and found that the beginning of her road was one of truth. she had not been to see reek since their embrace, and while the memory of it flushed her skin and caused her heart to race, the girl knew she must not dwell upon it. such moments were only a distraction from her true intentions.

it was with a quiet heart that she left seff with one who would entertain him and went to search out the third of her ties to the departed ridge pack: jhala, she who had climbed to reek's confidence, only to be usurped by the priestess. she avoided the lake alongside which she and the dark leader had consummated their desperate, frenzied bond and instead moved to the borders, calling for the beta to grace vuk with her presence.

Jhala comes without hesitation. It has been a while since she's really spoken to Vuk-- even after she was rediscovered along the borders. The dark beta has been too preoccupied trying to make Reek happy-- and plotting-- to really have any free time.

The girl arrives with a high head and a wagging tail. She's still large in size and rather muscular, but her weight has dropped dramatically. Her stomach sinks in and her hips are rather bony-- the only thing that hides her spine are the muscles in her back. She smiles at Vuk, amber eyes glinting in the hot sun. "Hiya, Vuk-- sup?" she says.

jhala arrived, and her cheeriness buoyed vuk's spirits. a wave of her plume was given the sable woman before vuk dipped closer to lick along jhala's jaw, then stood back to regard her friend fondly. surely they were still affable, despite what had happened? vuk hoped for it to be so. "j-hala!" she exclaimed in her halting way. "y-you l-look w...ell," the patchwork girl managed, before lapsing into a comfortable silence.

Jhala smiles sheepishly at the pale woman, glad to have been called well. It was not a huge gesture, but the girl had been tired and overworked for a while now-- and it was nice to think that someone else thought she was doing alright. "Thanks," she responds, her tail wagging behind her. "You too," she adds. The other looks thin and tired, sure, but Vuk is speaking more than Jhala has ever seen her-- which is a great thing in the Beta's mind.

"How've ya been, Vuk?" she then asks, her head cocking to the side. "How's uh-- Seff, right? Yeah.. How's Seff?"

"s-eff is g-good. gro-w-wing f-fast," vuk stammered in her usual way, but she did not feel shame in jhala's presence. the girl turned her turquoise eyes aside to gaze unseeingly beyond herself and the beta at some distant point, shoring up her faltering resolve.

"s-eff is n-not t-terich's s-on," the patchwork girl blurted, a cold relief washing her, followed quickly by her dread of jhala's judgment. "the r-ridge ... t-he ... m-man w-with n-no n-ame." vuk fell silent then, exhausted by herself and the emotions that cropped up wildly in her breast.

Her ears perk, and she is forced to think a moment before she can answer fully. "No name? You mean the beta? I actually named him Red in my head," she says, chuckling fondly at the memory, her tail thumping against the ground. She does not judge Vuk, though. Instead, she laughs a little harder and shakes her head with amusement. "Look at you! You totally told me you had a thing for him," she says, her tongue lolling out as she paws at her stammering friend. "Good for you!"

After a few moments though, some of the lightheartedness drains from her face and she tilts her head. "Does Terich know?" she asks, smiling still.

jhala did not judge -- vuk felt relief wash over her, manifesting itself in a brief tremble at her lips. but it passes and she breathed a sigh, smiling somewhat. "y-yes," the patchwork girl answered, the small bit of humour fading. "t-terich k-knows. t-there were f-four," vuk added, and the agony she had kept for many weeks buried in her chest stabbed sharply. "h-he b-buried t-the o...thers."

vuk refused to cry, not now, not in front of jhala; she shrugged as if to say 'there you have it,' but her turquoise eyes were washed blank with pain as she glanced beyond jhala's shoulder.

She pauses, her smile fading from her face. Vuk seems pretty shaken about it, but finishes as if it isn't truly important to her-- but Jhala can tell it most certainly is. "Well... well shit, Vuk... I'm really sorry to hear that," she says quietly, her ears flattening to her skull. Vuk looks past her, and Jhala does not try to catch her attention, but speaks to her still in an attempt to comfort her-- although she's certainly not a counsellor, by any means.

"Hey-- ya know what? it just makes Seff that much more important. He's like-- a miracle. And you've done so awesomely at raising him so far. Like, look at you, Vuk! You're fuckin' killin' it."

vuk was afraid she had frightened jhala away, but after a brief moment of tension, the girl rebounded and the patchwork wolfess grinned. "t-thank y-you," she murmured, unsure of how else to respond. her tail thumped against the ground once and she cleared her throat. if she had told jhala her most painful secret, it would be an easy thing to tell her the other.

"r-reek a-and i.." she began, trailing away, for she knew that jhala would know of what she spoke. "t-terich f-found m-me af...ter i r-ran a-way f-from the r-ridge a-and off-ered h-h-himself ... f-for m-my mate," vuk stuttered tiredly. "n-now i l-love t-them b-both." hurt filled her eyes.

Jhala frowns, unsure how to respond. "Hell, Vuk. Of all the problems you could face that's like-- the best one. Two guys? Damn," she says to start, making sure the girl knows that she does not judge her for this situation. She isn't sure how to respond though, and glances away for a moment, her face contorting into a strange expression as she thinks.

"Do Reek and Terich know that you love the other one?" she asks finally, glancing to the patchwork Sister.

jhala's judgement never came, and vuk finally let herself relax. "n-no," came her soft voice, accompanied by a gentle sigh. and how could she tell him? what could she even say? reek was consumed by his religion -- vuk considered he would not be with her for much longer. "i d-do n-not w-want to h-hurt him," she whispered tiredly, laying herself down upon the earth with a resigned huff.

Jhala frowns, completely out of sound advice (if there was any to begin with, really) and upset that she couldn't better help her friend. The dark girl moves closer to her friend as she lays herself down, nudging at her shoulder and resting her muzzle on the ground beside her. She lets out a low whine. "It'll be alright, Vuk," she then says quietly. "Thank you for telling me."

fade here? <3

vuk did not expect jhala's thanks, but took it with a low croon, leaning into her friend with a barely controlled sob. the touch of the beta wolf was what she needed in the difficult moment, and she too settled on the ground, to linger in jhala's presence and draw strength from the other as long as she was able. at length, vuk began to describe one of seff's latest antics, finding a smile within her as she spoke, and hoping jhala also was able to laugh.

Jhala smiles as Vuk leans into her, listening carefully to each of her stories about Seff. She has no intentions of having children herself, but it was always nice to hear about them elsewhere. Vuk was a wonderful friend, and the young Beta was estatic that the other considered her one as well.
