seff was gone.

vuk did not know how long he had been away, only that his place alongside her body in the den was empty. cold. his scent was beginning to fade, no matter how frantically she burrowed among the debris, seeking to paint his baby-fragrance on the hairs of her ruff. refusing to wash her son's traces from her, vuk's fur had grown matted along the spare expanse of her small body, grown all but skeletal with her refusal to eat unless terich insisted.

her days were spent in mindless patrol of the borders and surrounding lands -- vuk had come to believe that if she wore a certain number of steps into the ground, seff would be returned to her, whole and joyous. but each day the number changed, until the girl found herself counting beneath her breath in a jagged, unbroken line of numeric syllables that made sense only to her.

in the glow of sunset she came for the hundredth time to the edge of the territory and watched the dying sun bleed across the heavens in hues of pink, of gold. but her eyes were unseeing; she counted in her head the moments, her lips moving noiselessly as her gaze fixed on some point ahead.

the daystar.

raas.

vuk had refused to come before the daystar, had refused to bow her head beneath the worship dictated by the red woman. it had taken all from her -- reek, their love, her son. and now her sanity threatened to slip away like so much smoke beneath a single breath. a muscle along her jaw twitched.

perhaps she was being punished for her hubris, for her refusal to worship raas. the thought had occurred to vuk before, but for the first time she did not push it away, and it took root within the shattered confines of her mind. if she bowed, if she worshipped, if she did well in the sight of the lord -- perhaps seff ... perhaps he would come back.

it was worth the attempt, vuk decided, the muscle jumping again as her mouth paused in its counting. the sunken eyes, once a brilliant turquoise, caught dully the light of the sun. "raas," vuk whispered at last, her voice broken. "raas."
