All Welcome
The rain was stubborn in these wilds -- pouring day by day without showing any signs of letting up -- and it drove Piety further from @Neven than he cared for, in his attempts to keep them both well fed. He was a restless sort of brute, and the considerable changes to his daily routine necessitated that he go on these solo hunts; lest his companion smother him with her chattiness, leaving him no room for introspection. He missed being alone with his thoughts, but not quite as much as he missed the darkling spitfire's company when he had gone too long without it.

He thought about her now, and knew he should turn back, even if he hadn't managed to catch anything to show for his absence. The ground was overly soft and his weight buried each of his paws ankle-deep into the bog's muck. The rain at his back was softer than it was an hour ago, but the earth still only seemed to get weaker the longer he went on.

Ahead was a muddy incline, gently run over with a sheet of water overflowing from a river nearby. Piety took one look at the steep walk and turned to walk parallel to it. He didn't think it was safe to climb, but he wasn't ready to return to shelter yet either, so the sentinel soldiered on: head down and tail up as he went.
