Mantli had said it was okay if she played in the shallow waters beneath the willows, so long as she only stayed to the ankle-high portion -- where the river was thin and stretched out so that it burbled gently over the mossy sheets of rock covering the bottom. There was not much vegetation in the water, save for along the edges of the banks downstream -- where she could see there were deeper pools where the river had cut into the land and conformed it to the bend of deeper waters from times pasts. Dragonflies zipped through the air, shoals of minnows occasionally grew brave enough to swim close to where she splashed only to be chased away by her antics and on again, frogs jumped along the banks, crawfish darted beneath the slimy rocks, and waterbugs skated magically along the surface of the creek. There was plenty to capture the young girl's attention.

The latest thing to draw her silver and gold eyes was a green turtle that had popped out of its hiding hole and slid into the water nearby -- freezing atop its favorite mossy sunning log when it realized it wasn't alone in the water. The reptile and the baby wolf eyed each other for a frozen moment and then Momo exploded after it, yipping excitedly as she crashed through her own waves towards the retreating red-eared slider -- which had dove back into the water and was furiously paddling away in terror.
