Near the lip of the entrance, in the thick forest, there was a tree felled by natural forces, leaning against its comrades. The ground in which its roots were once embedded was softened and moved easily under the force of clawed paw, and, after only half a daylight's work, she had dug a broad indent in the earth.
Of it she would make a den, modeled after what she knew of the way wild creatures lived, with the naked roots acting as overhang and camouflage.
The woods now darkened, the bear-dog moved away from her work, and leaned her back against a healthy maple.
Something was crawling its way up her throat.
At first it was murmuring, then muttering. Soon, it became singing.
