Tiger appeared to stand over her but Wildfire scarcely noticed her. She was too busy watching the altercation unfold. Fortunately, Reek submitted to Peregrine before he could get himself deeper into trouble. Wildfire gnawed on her lip as her father commanded him to leave, then hurled one of the mallard carcasses at his retreating back. She didn't quite understand why he did that, but then she didn't really understand much of what had just happened, beginning with her allergic reaction and ending with her father looking down at her with utmost concern written all over his swarthy face.

She bobbed her head, then slowly rose and slunk to press herself against his leg much like she had done to Elwood's moments ago. Wildfire said nothing of the day's events—that would come later, after she'd had some time to process everything—but instead asked, "Go home now?" in a small voice. She was exhausted and thirsty from all the crying. She just wanted to curl up, go to sleep and forget about all of this.
