The world began to crumble around her as Elwood, in his final words, essentially admitted defeat.  Finley looked at him then, allowing her gaze to linger upon the sharpness of his cheekbones and the dark freckles that lined his muzzle and shadowed the corners of his eyes.  In that moment, she knew that she had never loved anyone in her life as much as she loved him.


Which was why she felt the briefest, most fleeting moments of peace as she turned away.  "This is what has to be," she replied, barely even waiting a moment before she began to trot steadily away - following the edge of the little stream away from their home, out towards the boundaries of the Caldera, and away from the lives she had no doubt were far, far better off without her.
