Not only did Wildfire miss again, the other she-wolf turned the tables on her entirely. In a matter of seconds, she grabbed the yearling's scruff, hip-checked her and shoved her to the ground. It was so similar to the way Goober had handled her that a noise like a snarling scream wrenched loose from her mouth. Not only did she continue to struggle, she writhed and lashed, twisted and thrashed. There was no longer a single, solitary rational thought in Wildfire's head as she bloodied herself more in her attempt to break free.
She couldn't raise her voice very much, not since Junior's attack, but she yelped, "No! No! No!" until, finally, she managed to tear free from the other wolf's grasp. "Don't touch me!" she hissed as she leaped clear, teeth bared in a savage snarl that looked like a strange mask on her face. Her fight-or-flight instincts were now raging inside her and she badly wanted to attack again, yet Wildfire knew she might end up in the other wolf's control again she couldn't bear it.
So she turned and fled, nearly tripping over the coyote's stiffening body before running pell-mell toward the refuge of Nocturne Summit's upper crags. She tripped and stumbled in her haste, even bumping her chin and nearly biting off her tongue. By the time she found a small cave in which to wedge herself, she was shaking badly and swearing to herself that she would never let another wolf—male or female—touch her again.
