Although the Bandrona didn't acknowledge the comforting words, she clung all the more tightly to the gray she-wolf, crying until Finley's toes were surely soaked with saltwater and Wildfire herself succumbed to exhaustion.

She didn't sleep, just quieted and went still. For a long while, Wildfire just lay there in silence, still latched to her aunt's feet. Eventually, she sniffled and opened her mouth to say something. What came out was a croak. She clapped her mouth shut, cleared her throat and tried again. "You—mentioned—pups?" It came out rather stilted and though her tears had ebbed, two globules formed on her eyelids, wobbling precariously before streaking down her cheeks.
