"It's not your fault," Elwood murmured quietly, and he spoke truthfully. None of this was the fault of either Blackthorn -- not Lucy's kidnapping, nor what had happened to her afterward, and especially not her rejection of them. They had searched far and wide for her, had exhausted their bodies and their resources; and while it hadn't been enough, he still tried to convince himself that they had done nothing wrong. Some things were simply out of their control, and sadly, this was one of them.

He kissed Finley's cheek, then dared to speak the words that even he wasn't sure he could believe. "Maybe...she'll come back to us someday," he mused, despite the improbability of that statement. "And if she doesn't..." He hesitated, his tongue suddenly feeling thick. "If she doesn't, then at least we know she's being taken care of." It didn't hurt any less, but it was strangely reassuring to know that she had at least found somewhere to call home.
