With a frown firmly in place, he pushed himself up—with some resistance from his body—and found his legs carrying him in the direction of their visitor. His mind wandered as he neared the border, trying to find a reason for the sudden request to see their late queen; under the influence of the past, he couldn’t remember that the voice was familiar to him.

Reaching them, he was mildly surprised to see Potema there, already speaking with the other woman. He looked towards the boy that accompanied her, briefly, but he didn’t hold his interest. Instead, he found himself gazing at the chimera, vaguely recognising her; he’d met her before—before even Meldresi. Her appearance was hard to forget, having yet to meet another like her in all his life, but he had no name to put to the face. Lingering on it no longer, he closed the distance between himself and the group, coming up alongside Potema—who he offered a nod to in greeting, before giving his attention to the pair opposite them. For now, he said nothing, having caught the end of the white woman’s news and knowing that he need not repeat it.
