He had been napping. Earlier in the morning he had completed what he considered to be "rounds". He wasn't too sure he was allowed near the borders yet (@Wildfire cried every time he got too close since the other children have disappeared). So he takes to marking Hougeda instead.
But the nap! Oh, the nap! He had been half-asleep when a demanding chuff pulls him from peaceful slumber, and one of his bronze eyes slits open. Ugh, he thinks but rises without protest, and stretches before he draws himself close, looking up at Helix with inquisitive eyes.
