He probably shouldn't have returned here. It wasn't going to benefit him in any way, but curiosity got the better of him, and Kaertok returned to the pack that had obviously been failing when he had left it. The call of a stranger (to be fair, all the wolves here were still strangers to him) caught his attention, and Kaertok loped toward the sound until he found its source.

This pack is weak, the Tartok wolf said, They lack leadership. True, Kaertok himself had not attempted to overthrow the existing leader, but by the smell of it, somebody had already done the job for him. Firefly's scent was nowhere to be found, and another was already fading.
