Gannet was about a day behind in reaching the forest, having left as soon as he had an answer and trailing their tracks. He did not want to linger on it, mostly because he wanted to get past this soft sadness that had settled on him. He did not understand why they had felt the need to go and this time, with the children, the parting was even worse.
Silently Gannet slowed to a stop and lingered a minute, glancing at the trees around him. He was glad that Liffey led the way because he had no clue the exact destination they sought, but even the broken day-old trail would lead him true.
He took a moment - deep breath in, deep out. Then, with little enthusiasm and more than a little dread, he continued onward.
